The Lord's Taverners: Colin Woolf - Wildlife Paintings
The Lord's Taverners' charity
|
Since 1950 the Lord's Taverners have been raising money to 'give young children, particularly those with special needs, a sporting chance'. There are branches throughout the UK, and one of the ways they raise money is by auctioning works of art at prestigious events, sometimes involving celebrities and former England cricketers. |
I was approached about ten years ago by a friend who was helping to organise a fund-raising event for the Taverners in the Channel Islands, and the result was a very successful exhibition and auction which raised a large sum of money for the charity. Since then, I have produced several major paintings for the Lord's Taverners, which have been auctioned (along with exclusive, Limited Edition prints) for many thousands of pounds.
Three of the paintings were of Barn Owls, chosen because of their fragile beauty and universal appeal. There was a link with cricket in each one, through either a distant cricket ground or discarded cricket gear in the foreground. Prints of the second in the series, 'Eve of Test Dinner', were counter-signed by Sir Colin Cowdrey, and prints of the most recent painting, 'We're on a Hat Trick' are counter-signed by past Presidents of the Taverners: Sir Tim Rice, Richard Stilgoe and Robert Powell.

The original painting entitled 'We're on a Hat Trick' was auctioned in July 2004 at a celebrity cricket match, held on Sark in the Channel Islands. Jo, the girls and I were all invited to the 'Cricket Weekend', which we enjoyed very much. In just two days the original painting and just a few Limited Edition prints raised £16,500 for the Taverners' Charity - a wonderful achievement.

I have only one or two prints remaining of the latest painting, 'We're on a Hat Trick', counter-signed by the past Presidents mentioned above. They are already fetching way above their purchase price at auctions around the UK. Please give me a ring for more details!
