A composite painting with pencil sketches, by wildlife artist Colin Woolf

A recent image of a study showing before and after pencil sketches, with watercolour, of a renovation of an old building, an example of the other kinds of work that I accept from time to time. This kind of work is sometimes a welcome break from feathers and allows me to stretch my technique and experiment with different methods.

'The Gift of Wings'

All my images are inspired by real life observations and experiences. The depth and drama in this sky took a great deal of time to create with repeated washes, giving an almost 3D effect. The result is a majestic backdrop, making the perfect setting for a soaring Golden Eagle.

This is the painting that started my career off, it is the moment when I realised that I could actually achieve the effects that I wanted in watercolour.
